Benchmark Workloads

MobileMark 2005 offers four score-producing workloads modeling a variety of real-world mobile user scenarios. It also features a System Conditioning workload which should be run once after installation to ensure more consistent, reproducible scores.

For a more detailed discussion of these workloads, read the MobileMark 2005 White Paper at www.bapco.com.

DVD Playback 2005

The DVD Playback 2005 workload is based on a 2-hour movie that BAPCo has created from content provided by BMW®. The test starts the DVD player application, sets up a full screen playback, and then plays the movie, repeating it until system shutdown at battery depletion.

The DVD Playback 2005 workload produces a battery life score.

Wireless 2005

The Wireless 2005 workload is based on a user scanning through a long series of web pages as if the user were going through all of the hits listed by an Internet search engine looking for some specific content. Specifically, the workload drives the browser to load a new web page over the open network, pause for a short while, and then load yet another new page. The workload is repeated until the battery is fully depleted.

To use this workload, you must have another computer available to serve as a web server using the "Wireless Server 2005" CD-ROM..

Productivity 2002SE

The Productivity 2002SE workload models a mobile professional at a fictitious automobile company. The worker creates documents using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, accesses email, and creates graphics and animation with Photoshop and Flash to include in a multimedia presentation. An Internet browser is used to view presentations. The user also invokes file compression and virus detection in the background. The workload repeats until the battery is fully depleted.

The Productivity 2002SE workload produces a battery life score and a performance score.

This workload is substantially similar to the Productivity workload in MobileMark 2002. Specific details about the differences can be found in the MobileMark 2005 White Paper, available at www.bapco.com.

Reader 2002SE

The Reader 2002SE workload models a reading a book on his mobile computer. The test cycles through the book slowly until the battery is fully depleted.

The Reader 2002SE workload produces a battery life score.

This workload is substantially similar to the Reader workload in MobileMark 2002. Specific details about the differences can be found in the MobileMark 2005 White Paper, available at www.bapco.com.

System Conditioning

The System Conditioning workload should be run once after installing MobileMark 2005 to condition the battery and allow Windows XP to perform system optimization. Performing this step should help you achieve more consistent and reproducible test results.

By running this workload, you are forcing the battery to be fully depleted and fully recharged, and ensuring that Windows XP has had the opportunity to perform the same disk caching and code prefetching optimizations as it would do on a typical user's system.

Once you run this workload on a MobileMark 2005 installation, it should not be necessary to run it again unless the disk or battery configuration changes, or if the system has been used excensively recently for purposes other than running MobileMark 2005.

The System Conditioning workload produces no score.
